The Programme for Urban Management, of the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements (UNCH/HABITAT), promotes discussion of experiences in managing polluted rivers, lakes and reservoirs in urban areas and the formation of a network or integrated work among cities and urban stakeholders interested in the search for solutions to this environmental problem.
The August 20-23 meeting in Ciudad de Belén, Brazil, provided a forum for reflecting on the following objectives:
Participating at this event were representatives from municipalities in Latin America and the Caribbean, federations and social organizations, academicians, NGOs and research centers, and agencies for technical and financial cooperation involved in integrated management of polluted water resources.
One of the main outcomes anticipated is the creation of a Latin American working group whose efforts would be aimed at assisting in the formation and training of local actors, for participative management of urban rivers and other water resources.
Through the city working groups, PGU-ALC will generate a regional mechanism aimed at promoting and transferring experiences in urban management.
Participants of the groups may be representatives of Latin American cities; municipal associations; social, civil or private development organizations; universities; professional organizations or other stakeholders with capacity for collaborating in this area.
