World Commission on
Protected Areas in Central America (WCPA-CA)

Its priority in recent years has been to support the
development of the regional strategic program for the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor
(MBC), which has become the best instrument for supporting the expansion and
solidification of the Central American System of Protected Areas (SICAP), and the best
means for linking the multiple conservation initiatives in the region, country by country.
The MBC is now the agenda with greatest political backing to promote land use planning and
regional bio-management, and biodiversity conservation within protected areas, on the one
hand, and on the other, sustainable use of biodiversity in the areas of interconnection
between them.
WCPA has been working to identify gaps in ecosystem
representation in protected areas and at the regional level, as well as exploring the
possibility of creating Conservation Units in each country to facilitate government
efforts to administer the areas, while simultaneously promoting greater involvement in
their management by local governments, producer organizations and indigenous peoples.
Thanks to the commission's efforts the Agenda of the Mesoamerican Corridor has
incorporated wetlands of regional and international importance as a central theme of
action, as well as regional coastal zones, especially those located in border areas
between two or three countries.
